Few kilometres (less than one hour by car) away, it is possible to visit many villages/towns of the Tuscia, Umbria and Tuscany, areas of the Etruscan culture . A zone rich of tourist attractions, both from the historical , and naturalistic point of view.

In this page you will find the places you can visit in a one-day excursion

During the year, in every  place, folkloristic wine and gastronomic festivals are held.

 


 

                                                                                Sites of historical interest


Orte (7 kms - north) Small town in the Valley of the Tevere (the river going to Rome), located on a high cliff of 'tufo', surrounded from North to East by a branch of the river Tevere, and to South from its tributary, Rio Paranza (that crosses the woods of the estate of Poggio Paradiso). Orte was a flourishing Etruscan town . On the cliff on which it rests, ample caves  were dug  to build necropolis and subsequently turned into dove-cotes. The characteristic medieval plan of the town is still preserved .


Vignanello: (8 kms - Southwest)  Ruspoli palace, imposing and marvellous castle of the IX century, later restructured by the Vignola to gain the forms of the present  Italian garden .

 


Viterbo: (30 Kms - vest) Nice town preserving its medieval characteristic very well. You can walk around the beautiful district of S. Pellegrino or shop at the artisan shops’. The festival of Saint  Rosa is interesting and spectacular.  The Saint’s "macchina" is transported in the narrow streets of the centre.

Having been a Papal residence for a long period, it has become wealthy of thermal baths and monuments.

 

Bomarzo: (18 kms Northwest) Old medieval castle owned by powerful local  families (Orsini and Lante della Rovere). You can visit the famous Park of the Monsters, rich of enormous sculptures dug in the rocks of peperino to represent tied up figures belonging to dream world: monstrous faces, elephants, bears, ogres, dragons and a very curious bent house.
Soriano nel Cimino: (12kms West ) Building of Chigi Albani, built in the XVI century, and widened in the XVIII. Castle Orsini, symbol of the city,  built from Pope Niccolò III in the XIII century

 

 


Anfiteatro di SutriSutri: (30 kms South) The Mitreo, probably resulting from the widening of an Etruscan  grave, it was a great room composed of three aisles with pillars in which religious ceremonies - devoted to the oriental cult of the god Mitra - were performed; with the affirmation of the Christianity the place became a rocky church, subsequently devoted to the Madonna of the Birth.
The most spectacular place is surely the amphitheatre, entirely dug into the 'tufo', dominated by the great evergreen oaks that form the sacred wood of Villa Savorelli.

Tomba etrusca

Vulci: (80 West kms) National  Etruscan museum, with exhibits coming from the necropolises of the ancient city of Vulci, situated in the Castle of the Abbadia, that belonged to the order of the Templar .
 

 

Bolsena: (70 kms North West) By the homonymous lake, with Castle Monaldeschi, where a museum of naturalistic, archaeological  and local traditions is located.
Marta (50 kms North West): By the lake of Bolsena. To see: the Tower of the clock and the Farnese Building .
Civita Castellana: (34 South kms) In the area of Civita Castellana, ceramics represent the primary industrial activity. You can buy  tiles, bath accessories, potteries and objects of art. The  art of ceramics dates back to the beginning of the history of this town and it has been favoured from the presence of wide layers of clay . An interesting collection of  dishes, painted tiles, and manufactured articles of the most important local ceramic teachers is preserved in the museum .
Amelia: (30 kms Northeast) With a nice  Roman door, You can visit the suggestive underground cisterns and the magnificent statue of Germanico.
Narni: (30 kms Northeast) Typical historical town with medieval small houses in stone, roads with arcs, squares and towers.

 

Orvieto: A city founded by the Etruscans, whose historical centre is almost entirely constituted by the characteristic houses of tufo. The cathedral, masterpiece of the Italian Gothic, artisans’ shops, the Well of St. Patrick with the two spiral crossed staircases, created by the architect Antonio Sangallo. Extremely suggestive the underground world to the cliff, with wells and caves (currently there are more than a thousand). There are also many cultural activities, among which: Umbria Jazz Winter Festival in the period of New Year's eve, with international interpreters and the wine-gastronomic happening "Slow Food."

                          Sites of naturalistic interest

Vignanello: (8 kms - southwest) The  Italian garden inside the  Ruspoli Building.

 

 

 

Sutri: (30 South kms) Botanical Gardens of St. Liberato, created between 1965 and 1975 from the counts Sanminiatelli with the help and the guide of Russel Page.


Caprarola: (20 South kms) Marvellous park garden of the Building Farnese.

Bagnaia: (25 kms - West) Medieval suburb , Italian garden and park of Villa Lante, with the Fountain of the Four Moors, planned by the Vignola. Numerous fountains, theatre of clever water games are situated on the impending hill.


Lake of Bolsena:
(50 West kms) The biggest lake of volcanic origin in Europe and fifth for dimensions in Italy. A road of around 60 Kms surrounds it. The panorama is always spectacular. Waters come from the volcanic complex Vulsinio, and has a maximum depth of 151m and a perimeter of 43 km; emerge two islands, Bisentina and Martana  probable residues of volcanic craters. On the banks there are woods of oaks and chestnut trees; cultivations of grapes, olives and vegetables. Among the available attractions: sailing, windsurfing and fishing.
Monti Cimini:   (28 km Southwest) A small  mountain complex (1053 meters), that serves as scene to the east panoramas of Poggio Paradiso, rich of woods with excursion itineraries and picnics, dense woods of oaks, ashes, beeches, elms and chestnuts, ploughed by clear brooks and fresh sources and inhabited areas by many wild animals.
|  Naturalistic and archaeological paths: of the "Wood of the
 Bandita' and of the "Valloni" inside the Park Marturanum near Barbarano.

Lake of Vico: The Natural Reserve of the Lake of Vico extends for about 3.200 hectares, including  environments of great naturalistic interest such as a marshy neighbouring to the lake and an interesting  beech-wood of the Venus Mountain.

 

Valley of the river Treja: (47 South kms) The river Treja flows among buttresses of volcanic origin crossed by smaller courses of water typically creating an "Etruscan" landscape with precipice 'tufo' walls.
After that the Treja divides in a succession of small cascades. Numerous sources feed the course of water, also of mineral  water (one is thermal).
 

 


Park of the Rufeno mountain: (75 kms North) The approximately three thousand hectares of the protected area of woods; with  streams, ponds and fountains that make pleasant  the excursions together with flora and fauna exclusive of these environments.
Oasis of Alviano: (37 kms North) Placed near the border between Umbria and the Lazio,  it has an extension of around 900 hectares, where more than one hundred kind of aquatic birds transit. Equipped with huts for bird watching, towers of spin and gangways that allow to explore it.
Valnerina: (50 km Northeast) Run of notable beauty formed by the river Nera in the Umbrian territory , besides the marvellous walks in the green, you may enjoy rafting, boating and canoeing on the rapids of the river.
